There are so many wonderful sights and attractions in Phuket but of all these attractions, there is one that truly stands out – it is called the Big Buddha. It is one of the most beloved landmarks in this amazing part of Thailand. This massive image majestically sits atop the Nakkerd Hills which are between Chalong and Kata. It stands at a height of 45 meters and that explains why you can see it from all parts of the island, from Phuket Town and even Karon Beach.
While you are at Big Buddha, you have the advantage of having a full 360-degree view of the island. Imagine enjoying the incredible views of Kata, Chalong Bay, Karon, all of Phuket Town and so many more. Yes, all these are yours at the Big Buddha site. Getting to the location is not difficult as one can get there using a six-kilometer long oscillating road that branched off from the principal road in Phuket. By all estimates, this is a place that you must visit whenever you find yourself in Phuket.
One thing that is common with everyone who has had the chance and opportunity to visit this amazing place is that they have all described the place as the most serene and peaceful place that they have ever been to in their lives. Imagine a tropical paradise where the only thing that you get to hear is nothing but the stimulating sounds of tiny bells and the flapping of bright yellow flags of Buddhism on the holy ground. Perfectly blended to all this is the soul-calming dharma music that has provided succor for people for thousands of years.
Even though the visitors and tourists alike know this amazing landmark as Big Buddha, what is certain is that native Thais also have their own affectionate name for it. They refer to it as Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri Buddha, such an amazing name, isn’t it? This structure as its main statue as the primary center of attraction and it measures 25 meters across the base.
The Big Buddha is truly an imposing structure from whatever angle one looks at it. The body itself is made using reinforced concrete which is then blended with charming white jade marble from Burma. It is this marble that gives the holy site its very attractive shine whenever the Sun is out. The views of the Big Buddha is one that seems to be taken right out of fantasy but the best thing about this place is that it is actually real.
There is another interesting spectacle to the whole scenery. Not far from the principal Phuket Big Buddha is another Buddha statue which is smaller in size but by no means diminished in its majesty and grandeur. Made of brass which enables it to shine with a golden appearance, it is really catchy to the eye for anyone who sees it. From all that has been said and described above, you can see very clearly that Big Buddha is definitely a place everyone must visit at least once in a lifetime.
