Although it is almost always warm in Thailand, Thai people know that the hottest month of the year is April. Unfortunately, this is not an April Fool’s Day Joke (trust me, I wish it was too). During this hottest time of the year, we Thais cool down by celebrating a tradition called “Songkarn”, which is held annually from April 13-15. But what exactly is Songkarn festival and how do we celebrate it? Whilst many countries celebrate New Year’s Day on January 1st, Thai people do it on April 13th. Yes, it is Thai New Year. In fact, April 14th is also Family’s Day. However, this doesn’t mean we do not celebrate on January 1st. We just do it differently on our New Year’s Day by go out and splash water on each other. Major streets are closed on these days and the country is always flooded with tourists from around the world who wish to enjoy the famous tradition. And of course, Phuket is one of the best place to celebrate Songkarn, so pack your bags, the holidays are right around the corner.
