Phuket Oldtown – Phuket might be best known for its gorgeous beaches. However, the beloved city has loads more to offer. One of them being its stunning oldtown and historical streets. Here you can expect things that are unlikely to be seen at any Thai provincial capitals. Safe to say that the city of Phuket has its own personality. As we mentioned before, Phuket has a rich history of tin trade. It is well-known to the Europeans since the 16th century. Hence, when the European mining companies were invited in, major public infrastructure such as roads and canals were also built. Two styles of building in particular stand out: the shophouses (Sino-Portuguese style) and the big mansions (Sino-Colonial style).
These buildings mainly located on a central street called “Thalang street”. It is probably one of the busiest streets in Phuket and also a major route for road traffic. However, every Sunday evening it transforms into a Walking Street, where you can shop, eat and more. Wandering around the street, you might see many houses that have family crest on it. This is because back in the glory days of mining in the south of Thailand, many miners and noble families had lived on the street. Thalang street now reflects the more than three cultural heritages of the past, the Thai, Muslim, Chinese, Indian and European heritages.
There are even neo-classic style buildings in Soi Rommanee. The house number 107 to 129 have the neo-classical curve windows and the colours of the buildings on the street stand out more than any Sino-Portuguese elsewhere. They are definitely worth a visit, if you are keen on walking through the history lane of Phuket.
Nowadays, many old buildings have been converted into shops, museums, restaurants and hotels. Here are some places to visit: Phuket Provincial Hall, Thai Hua Museum and Bann Chinpracha Museum.
