Phuket has many kinds of monkeys but the most common are macaques. Visitors in Phuket are most likely to encounter a monkey (or many) during their stay in Thailand. Be ready for they can be very wild, especially if you’re offering them food.
If you’re anticipating your encounter with these grey-brown wild creatures then you’ve come to the right place. Imagine these monkeys running after you, or looking at you with their doe-eyes waiting for an opportunity to steal your food. Phuket has many tourist spots for monkey viewing, with wild creatures an entertainment for the people visiting Thailand. If you’re one of the adventurous types, then visiting one of these places is a must for you. You’ll find monkeys in any of the following places
Located at the north of the Phuket town the Monkey Hill (Khao To Sae) is home to many of these over friendly monkeys. This Hill has aerial masts and can be spotted by most of the Island. It is 270m above mean sea level and most of the monkeys are at the top of the hill. Previously they allowed you to drive up the hill so the best way to visit this spot was by a car. As they don’t allow anyone to drive up the hill, you have to walk to the top. The walk up is about 2km from there, prepare yourself to walk among these cute but wild animals. Even with their innocent eyes and cute faces the monkeys can be aggressive if they are triggered.
Rang Hill is also known as Kao Rang its summits offer vast views of neighboring islands too. Another hill at the north of the town, it has many monkeys waiting for you to visit them. Rang Hill didn’t have a big monkey population until a fee years ago. Unlike Monkey Hill it is a famous tourist spot where many of the visitors come to take a breather and monkey watch. Some even come here to exercise or dine-in at the restaurants. The monkeys here are found to be loitering around the parking area as they tend to find more food options here. Many people feed them so they’re also seen taking handouts and sifting through the garbage. Just make sure you’re at a safe distance from these monkeys!
The Ko Sirey Viewpoint is at the east of Phuket town. As you go towards Ko Sirey driving past the fishing port and shipyards you enter an area of mangroves. This area is where many of the monkeys reside in the East Phuket. Local authorities have built a viewing point by the side of the road. Many of the visitors come to this quite place to relax. The hill also has a nice temple providing a place to worship for the people.
Bang Rong Pier is in the Thalang District. Along with the floating restaurants on the North east cost of Phuket, Bang Rong has many monkeys. These monkeys hang around the mangroves jumping from one place to another. In recent years they have caused some serious trouble. Eating car aerials and stealing belongings of the people are some of their antics. These situations are altering their tourist-friendly perception.
